In total, the efforts of Padua and the Kern lab in collaboration with other Brandeis laboratories led to the donation of 250 boxes of gloves, 150 surgical masks and seven pairs of safety goggles. Brandeis lab scientists have pitched their projects, including HIV vaccines (Sebastian Temme, Krauss lab), neuroslicers (Yasmin Escobedo Lozoya, Nelson lab) and the use of carrot fiber as an anti-diabetic (Michelle Landstrom, Hayes lab) to a panel of distinguished, outside judges. Our chemical biology program is directed at the design and synthesis of carbohydrate clusters which mimic important binding surfaces in biology. His lab has devised tools for directed evolution of modified DNA and peptides as an approach to designing carbohydrate vaccines against HIV. D.
